- When is the Best Time to Take Vitamins?
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: I and my husband take our daily vitamins quite faithfully. But we
- do have our own differences in technique. Hubbie takes his vitamins before
- his meals, while I was taught to take them after my meals. Would you please
- straighten us out and tell us who is right? Also I would like to know if it
- is better to take them in the morning or in the evening. Thank you for your
- help.

-
- ANSWER: According to most experts, the proper time to take vitamins is at
- mealtime, along with your food. In this way vitamins are absorbed along with
- the rest of your food and provide you with the greatest benefit. Mealtime is
- considered to span a time from a few minutes before a meal to up to a half an
- hour afterwards. By that standard you are both right, and I like things that
- way. However, some authorities are a bit more specific, maintaining that the
- very best time for your vitamins is immediately after eating. So perhaps you
- are a bit more right than your husband. However, all agree that it is best to
- spread out your vitamins over the day, by taking some after each meal. This
- will provide the highest level of vitamins in the system over the longest
- period of time. If it is not possible to take some after each meal, either
- because your dose is not that high, or because you are just not home during
- the day, divide the quantity you take into two doses, one for the morning, the
- other with the evening meal. Finally, if you must take all your vitamins all
- at once, then it is best to take them after your largest meal of the day,
- which for most people is dinner, most commonly the evening meal.
- To be complete, I must also inform you that at least one reference
- provides the advice that oil soluble vitamins should be taken before meals,
- and water soluble vitamins should be taken afterwards. That's pretty
- difficult to do if you are taking a "one a day" multivitamin preparation. Now
- that we have worked our way through all this information, here's my final
- word. Just take them! Your husband as he wishes, and you following your
- desires. And may you both take them together for many years to come.
